I have sql server 2000 sp3a installed.
How can I know (and from where can I download) which patches have I to
install on my box?

There are many hotfixes for SQL2000 SP3A but you would have to at least
contact MS to get them and then they would probably charge you unless you
have the problem that they fix. There has been 1 security patch, MS03-031,
since SP3A came out but you can get this post MS03-031 patch with a download

contact MS to get them and then they would probably charge you unless you
have the problem that they fix. There has been 1 security patch, MS03-031,
since SP3A came out but you can get this post MS03-031 patch with a download

Patching for W2k3 SP1 server w/SQL Server 2005

Is the correct procedure for SUS patches to a server running SQL Server 2005, to set the client to download only and then manually shutdown SQL Server, apply patches, reboot, and restart SQL Server?

Do SQL Server 2005 patches download through SUS or is it manual SP only, except for hotfixes?

I don't have much experience with SUS, but the hotfix patches will take care of the services for you. SP2, which has publicly released quite yet, shows a list of processes in use to allow you to shut them down before patching. This will eliminate the reboot need.

What is the differnce between a Service Pack and Security Patches that come
out over time? What about Hot Fixes? Is Microsoft the only sources of
patches? Should I test the patch on a demo server before I place it in
production or should I just trust Microsoft?Hi
A SP is a fully end to end tested release that implements fixes and
enhancements to the base product. SP's are cumulative (then contain all
prior SP's fixes plus more).
A Security patch is a hotfix that addresses high priority fixes that if not
applied, could lead to compromised security.
A Hotfix is an update, issued to fix a specific problem that somebody had
encountered and Microsoft needs to fix as it could affect other users. A
Hotfix has limited support and does not have the massive amount of
regression testing as a Service Pack would as it is not possible in the
short time frames needed.
NEVER get a hotfix/SP/Security pack from any other source than Microsoft.
Microsoft never e-mails files either. There is always a link to their site
from where you can download it. You never know who has tampered with the
files if you don't get them yourself from MS.
With any release, always put it on test servers before production ones.
Functionality can change or behavior you were used to could be altered in a
way that your applications were not expecting.

service packs go through more testing than hotfixes there are so many
different environments out there that unless you test it in your specific
environment you can't be sure you're not going to hit an issue. Certainly in
our environment we have come across some very weird bugs just because of how
we have our servers configured (weirdest one yet was down to having an
affinity mask that was a multiple of 7 <g> )

Choose your product version and service pack level, then
click GO, and you will see a list of all security-related
hotfixes that apply. For instance, right now, the latest

That would be your call.Usually the service packs include all the patches
till then.Any bugs after that, if documented, would be having hotfixes.In
case you experience that, just search in http://support.microsoft.com and
apply the hotfix.If the bug is not documented you can call MS PSS.In any
case, make sure to read the related documentation and test it in a dev
environment before applying them in production.

Patch KB815495-8.00.0818-ENU ?

I am so very weary of these patches and Service packs for SQL 2000. So = very weary of them. But I'm even more weary of not applying them as the = last SQL worm made evident. The only way I was able to successfully = install Service Pack 3 was by completely renmoving SQL from my Windows = 2000 and then reinstalling from the CD-ROM and then applying SP3.
I really do not want to go through that again. Are there any issues = that I should consider before trying to apply this July 23, 2003 patch? = Here's my plan:
Run the download.
How does that sound?

I applied the security patch to 4 servers on Thursday, 2
were live production systems, 1 development and 1 QA. I
must say I was a little too anxious to apply them.
The patch stopped and started the server, which lasted
out 10 seconds. I haven't run into any problems..course
that's not to say that you won't have different results..
