PDF Printing example

Does anyone have a good example of printing to a PDF file using the web
service?
The one in the documentation does not stream the file back to the browser.
Thanks in advance.this is just a snippet, i'm assuming you already have the basics of using the
web service and getting a report, but just need to know the pdf portion:
report =rs.Render(reportPath,format,historyID,devInfo,parameters,credentials,showHideToggle,out
encoding, out mimeType, out optionalParams, out optionalWarnings, out
streamIDs);
Response.ClearContent();
Response.AppendHeader("content-length", report.Length.ToString());
Response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
Response.BinaryWrite(report);
Response.Flush();
Response.Close();

401 error...Authorization required. Do I need to give write rpermissions on
a folder? And which user gets it.
Thanks again.

Normally, if a user has a PDF creator software, it is hard to keep
them from modifying the PDF file; however, to set the attributes to
read only, you could try something like this in a custom ASP.NET
application.

Hope this helps.

PC shutdown while printing from report

Hi all,

I m new to SQL Server Reporting Service. I hope you guys can find some solutions to my problem.

When i try to print from report's toolbar, my pc suddenly restart. and I thought it may be some printer driver

conflict, and check my event logs also. but i can't find any error or warning message there at all.

Can anybody knows the source of the problem and solution.

Regards,
gakuci

Any luck with this? Are you aware of any special anti virus/spy software that could be causing this?

Looks like this is a driver problem. Try this KB article

Paused? I don't have no stinking time for pausing!

Ok, why are my indices all paused?
Ran out of diskspace the other day. Stopped the Service, moved the indices
to another drive (had a little problem with 1-2 of them which I believe I've
fixed.)
Have restarted, and every full text index on the machine, including one in a
different DB is in a paused state.
They have data and a search on them returns data.
But select fultextcatalogproperty('foo','populatestatus') returns 2.
What's up with that?
(This is on SQL 2000. Thankfully finally I'm moving off of SQL 7.0).

MSSearch will pause for several reasons; low disk space; memory pressures,
or if you are running on battery power.
Use the gatherlog utility to see if it gives any more hints as to why they
are paused. You can find it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\MSSearch\Bin
and it is called gthrlog.vbs. Copy this file to %windir%\system32
Then open a command prompt and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft
SQL Server\MSSQL\FTData\SQLServer\Gatherlogs
then do a dir /od locate a recent log and do this
cscript.exe gthrlog.vbs SQL0000600005.1.gthr
Replacing SQL0000600005.1.gthr with the name of your log.
This should reveal more details as to why MSSearch is pausing.

Ok, to reduce the number of variables, I did this on the full text index in
a different database that I did not touch: (i.e. it's not due to me moving
stuff, etc...)
Results are:

Just tried to STOP the population on this paused index.

And the index still shows itself as paused.
Looking at a gather file on the index (which I did move) in the original DB:

Now, this index had been fully populated before any of these problems
happened, so it should be fine. (i.e. no reason to pause, etc.)
I'm bewildered at this point.
Any other thoughts. (I mean worse comes to worse I'll simply destroy the
indices and rebuild them, but then I'll lose a week or two of time waiting
for the larger ones.)

Well, restarted means just that, stopping and restarting all the services in
question.
No joy.
So today I rebooted the box, and still no joy.
So I completely removed one index, including the catalog and recreated it
from scratch.
Now at least the status is 1 - population in progress.
Yet after 4 hours, nothing has been indexed.
Very strange.

Well, I sorta "gave in"
I had a suspicion that a 4-5 of the full-text indices I moved may have been
the source of the problem (because I ended up having to hand edit their
registry entries.)
Removing those and the remaining ones started to work.
So now just running an incremental build on the ones that are behind.
Thanks for the help Hilary.

Patching SQL server in the field?

I've been working with the DBAs to come up with a plan to Service pack and
patch our SQL servers in the field. I've search high and low and cannot find
any solid docs on if this is possible? supported or recommended? or how to d
o
it at all. I built a new test Software update package and it had only a hand
full of security updates for SQL. So i guess my questions are
1) Is this possible and are there documents to support it?
2) SQL service packs a built very differently then normal patches and
updates. Because of this is it not advisable to repackage them for SMS?
Thanks in Advance!!
DobolinaIt's possible with SQL Server 2000, but it uses some old installshield
technology so that you need to capture an answer file and use that (and be
pretty sure that your choises will work on each server where it will be
applied). I had some minor issues with this when I upgraded some 70-80
servers a couple of years ago.
With SQL 2005 Microsoft moved to Windows Installer, and it seems to be much
easier to upgrade. Last week I created an upgrade from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005
with SP2 that I'm able to run silently from the SMS client.

I too noticed the SP4 exe extracts into an old school directory structure.
Lucky we have a packaging wizard. I'll sick him on the task.

What is the differnce between a Service Pack and Security Patches that come
out over time? What about Hot Fixes? Is Microsoft the only sources of
patches? Should I test the patch on a demo server before I place it in
production or should I just trust Microsoft?Hi
A SP is a fully end to end tested release that implements fixes and
enhancements to the base product. SP's are cumulative (then contain all
prior SP's fixes plus more).
A Security patch is a hotfix that addresses high priority fixes that if not
applied, could lead to compromised security.
A Hotfix is an update, issued to fix a specific problem that somebody had
encountered and Microsoft needs to fix as it could affect other users. A
Hotfix has limited support and does not have the massive amount of
regression testing as a Service Pack would as it is not possible in the
short time frames needed.
NEVER get a hotfix/SP/Security pack from any other source than Microsoft.
Microsoft never e-mails files either. There is always a link to their site
from where you can download it. You never know who has tampered with the
files if you don't get them yourself from MS.
With any release, always put it on test servers before production ones.
Functionality can change or behavior you were used to could be altered in a
way that your applications were not expecting.

thanks for the answer. I am getting flack for wanting to test Service Packs
before they go into production.

SP4 will break applications if they use XP functions that access the
registry. How much fun will you have if your app uses it and it dies because
of this?
If they don't accept that you need to test compatibility, then maybe you are
working for the wrong company.

Patches and updates

Newbie question:
Does SQL Server 2000 have an updates service like that for
Windows that tells you what you have and what you need to
apply? Is there a comprehensive list of updates and
patches? I've looked thru MS website and I didn't locate
it yet.
Thanks for your time.
DionDion,
Iam not aware about any update service but you can certainly subscribe to

How do you know where to begin? Can you just start at the
latest greatest cumulative patch (Cumulative Patch for
Microsoft SQL Server (815495)) or is there a progression?

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/security/current.asp?
productid=30&servicepackid=0
Choose your product version and service pack level, then
click GO, and you will see a list of all security-related
hotfixes that apply. For instance, right now, the latest
for SQL2K with SP3 is MS03-031, which is a cumulative fix.

That would be your call.Usually the service packs include all the patches
till then.Any bugs after that, if documented, would be having hotfixes.In
case you experience that, just search in http://support.microsoft.com and
apply the hotfix.If the bug is not documented you can call MS PSS.In any
case, make sure to read the related documentation and test it in a dev
environment before applying them in production.

Patch KB815495-8.00.0818-ENU ?

I am so very weary of these patches and Service packs for SQL 2000. So = very weary of them. But I'm even more weary of not applying them as the = last SQL worm made evident. The only way I was able to successfully = install Service Pack 3 was by completely renmoving SQL from my Windows = 2000 and then reinstalling from the CD-ROM and then applying SP3.
I really do not want to go through that again. Are there any issues = that I should consider before trying to apply this July 23, 2003 patch? = Here's my plan:
Run the download.
How does that sound?

scary eh?

I got 4 sql2k5 servers with service patch version as following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.2221.00 (Intel X86) Feb 9 2007 17:30:38

Can anyone please advise me what is the easiest way to upgrade them to the

Meanwhile, what is the best practice to apply patches? Do you go to
microsoft website and check it out daily and apply it or other tricks?
Please advise. Thanks.
Hi
You may want to check out

Post SP2 there are also some additional fixes the last publically available
hotfix is http://support.microsoft.com/?Kbid=934459
You should test your applications to make sure they are still working on the
upgraded version before moving.

Patch 3a

Ok filks here is a strange one. Tried installing service pack 3am on my
Windows XP
machine that is at service 2 on the OS Level. Now from what I can gather
when service pack 3a for SQL server is installed it wipes out all the driver
file locations and reinstalls a new MDAC from what I can see. But it never
gets them installed and the SQL Server becomes mute because you can never
connect to it. I've included a copy of the Log file that get's generated from
the install any one care to take a stab at this one. The following is the
SQLSTP.Log File and under that is the Error Log from the SQL Server
Directory. Any help would be great just reply to the group here.

Directory. Any help would be great just reply to the group here
