PDF-Export Format not readable for non-windows users
i received the following mail today:
<snipp>
May be the reason is that I didn't read
this file with the Acroreader version 7.0 which is the latest available
for Windows. Please take into account that not everybody lives in a
Microsoft world: The latest available Acroreader under Linux is version
5! So I kindly request a readable version of my personal pdf-statement
P.S.: A closer analysis of the pdf file shows this error message:
**** This file has a corrupted %%EOF marker, or garbage after the %%EOF.
**** The file was produced by Microsoft Rptg Srvcs PDF Rendering
Extension 8. 0:
**** please notify the author of this software
**** that the file does not conform to Adobe's published PDF
</snipp>
My question:
Does the hotfix from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885444/en-us
fix my problems?
I got the beta SP2 already here, but the production environment is german so
i couldn't install the sp2 there.
Brian?

FrankDear "Frank",
are you running SP1 now?

pdf ifilter sp_fulltext_service settings dilemma
folks, he mentions the use of the following commands to allow the adobe pdf
ifilter to be used.
exec sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources', 1;
exec sp_fulltext_service 'verify_signature', 0;
This works fine. However, a few articles I've read suggest that after you
have added the ifilter, you should restore these less secure values back to
exec sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources', 0;
exec sp_fulltext_service 'verify_signature', 1;
Because I want to keep my SQL Server secure, I have run these statements.
However after stopping and starting SQL Server or rebooting, the pdf ifilter
is no longer available to SQL Server full text search. Therefore, no new
pdf's are indexed. Is this the expected behavior? If so, What good is it to
restore the values if you can't index new documents. On the other hand, how
can you justify the security risk by not restoring the values to their more
secure state? Am I missing something here?
Can you direct me to the articles which suggest you can re-enable the
verification of the signatures. My understanding is that these signatures
are verified each time SQL Server or MSFTESQL starts. This is the suggested
behavior.
The danger is that one of the iFilters you load could be a victim of a
buffer overflow or another exploit . While the risk of this happening if
real it is really quite unlikely.

Are you saying not to run the latter two commands? My experience is that
after you do, the pdf ifilter does not function for new documents. However,
then you have the dilemma of the security hole.

I have seen this only once before and reinstalling the Arial font fixed this issue. The error message you see comes from the Windows GDI library. To reinstall Arial, do the following. Note that these instructions are for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 only.
1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts
2. Right-click the Arial (TrueType) font and select delete
3. Reboot
4. Expand Arial.tt_ from the i386 or AMD64 directory on your Windows CD to a directory on your hard drive. To expand, you can use the expand.exe file in the i386/amd64 directory or an application like 7-Zip.
5. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts
6. From the File menu, choose Install New Font and then select the Arial.TTF file you expanded.
7. Reboot
Thanks.

PDF export buggy?
I have a LocalReport, when I'm exporting to a PDF using the following
code:
Warning[] warnings;
string mimeType;
string encoding;
string fileNameExtension;
string[] streams;
byte[] pdfContent;
string fileName;
FileStream pdfFile;
fileName = Path.GetTempPath();
fileName = Path.Combine( fileName, Report.DisplayName +
".pdf" );
pdfContent = report.Render( "PDF", null, out mimeType, out
encoding,
out fileNameExtension, out streams, out warnings );
using ( pdfFile = new FileStream( fileName,
FileMode.Create ) ) {
pdfFile.Write( pdfContent, 0, pdfContent.Length );
}
This works, except that some people that recieve the PDF cannot print
it properly. Our graphics guru was able to reproduce the problem and
said it seemed that those that didn't have postscript drivers wouldn't
be able to print the PDF. PCL drivers print the PDF fine.
Any idea what I can do to correct this? Is this a known issue?
Thanks
AndyI've been able to verify this.
Using the PCL drivers for a laser printer we have here, the PDF prints
fine. Uninstalling the print drivers and installing the PS printer
drivers, and we get one page with a few portions of text, followed by
a second page with this text:
ERROR: unmatchedmark
OFFENDING COMMAND: ]

Any ideas?|||I've narrowed it down a bit more. I have an embedded PNG in the rdlc
file; if I remove the Image control which displays the png from the
report, it prints fine.|||On Aug 30, 11:51 am, Andy <an...@.med-associates.com> wrote:

So I don't know if the particular PNG I was using was corrupt, or if
LocalReport.Render simply can't handle PNGs, but changing the PNG to a
JPG and using the JPG has fixed the issue, in case anyone else has
this problem.

For example, in report designer, the language options for Norwegian are
Name Lang-County Code
* Norwegian no
* Norwegian (Bokmal) nb-NO
* Norwegian (Nynorsk) nn-NO
To avoid the error when exporting to PDF always use nb-NO or nn-NO.

select a.dcode, COALESCE(b.district,-1) from table1 a, table2 b

|||This could possibly point towards a de-normalized database design.
It might be better if you created a separate lookup table to store a distinct list of 'dcode' values against the appropriate 'district' value (and possibly even split distinct 'district' values out to a second lookup table) - you could then store 'dcode' in both table1 and table2 and remove the 'district' column from table2. Depending on your database design there may even be scope to store 'dcode' in either table1 or table2 (and not both).
Granted, you might have to re-work substantial amounts of code but it would help you in situations such as the one you're currently facing and would, more importantly, help to maintain the integrity of your data.

|||I completely agree with Chris that you have an improperly desiged database.
First thing: You need to create a District table that has a district code/Id and description, and use this code in both of your tables. This fixes the inconsistency of codes.
Second: Why are you recording district in both tables? (your names give no clue) Does this district mean the same thing? Or could the be different for some logical reason? If they have the same meaning, then delete one and join to get the other one if you need it in a query. This will make sure that you don't get out of sync values.

Meanwhile, what is the best practice to apply patches? Do you go to
microsoft website and check it out daily and apply it or other tricks?
Please advise. Thanks.Hi

Password validation failed. The password does not meet Windows policy
requirements because it is not complex enough.

is there a way to turn this off on sql server(2005sp2) level.
Thanks in advancedTal shalom
Firstv of all in SQL Server 2005 using CREATE USER ... is recommended way
instead of sp_adduser.
Now regarding to the error you are getting, it is because you created LOGIN
with 'weak' password.
Please run in query builder (take a look at CHECK_POLICY=OFF parameter in
the BOL)
create login tal with password ='t',
go
create user Joe for login tal

Thanks for the answer. I understand that CHECK_POLICY=OFF can be done per
individual login . However can it be done on the SERVER level for ALL
logins. This would help us not nodify the
code when migrationg from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005
Thanks in advanced

By default CHECK_POLICY=ON.CHECK_POLICY are only enforced on Windows Server
2003 so I have no idea how to change it .

Password not Added after Installation
I recently installed MSDE 2000, by giving the following to
setup parameters in the Command Prompt:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\> D:\MSDE2000\Setup.Exe SAPWD="apple" SECURITYMODE=SQL
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 /L*v C:\MSDELog.txt
C:\>
In log file, it did mentioned that the installation is
successfull at it's end of the file. However the SA
password is blank eventhough I gave the password
as "apple". Why did this happen. Is there anything wrong
in my setup parameter mentioned in the Command Prompt?
Help required on this matter, cos there are several
computers left to install MSDE 2000 and hoping to use the
above setup parameters.
Thanx in advance,
shahzard.

the command line is ok, and i reproduced the problem on a Win2k box, where
SECURITYMODE=SQL has not been honored...
will investigate a little further... for workaround, run Regedit, locate
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\InstanceName\MSSQLServer
and set LoginMode key = 2

Password Error... while installing SQL SP 3a
error message.
"Setup was unable to validate your password. Press retry to enter password
or press cancel to exit out of setup" "Retry and Cancel" buttons.
I am entering a valid password. What are the reasons that it may throw this
error message?
Also I noticed that My SQL server and SERVER agent are getting stopped while
doing this SP installation.
SQL 2K.
Any comments and thoughts. Thanks you,
SmithI had a similiar occurance with SP4. My situatiuon was that the service
account for the engine was authenticating to another domain and I was logged
into the domain the machine was in via remote desktop. Once I altered the
service to use the account in the same domain as the machine, all was fine.
needless to say, some of our installs are jacked up.

Password Audit
I am in the process of auditing a SQL server and was checking for NULL
passwords. I ran the following query select name, password from
master..sysxlogins where password is NULL.
It returned the expected windows accounts with NULL passwords, but it also
returned two unknown accounts with NULL for the SID, Name, and Password, and
a status of 192.
Has anyone ever seen this before, and if so, what they might be?
Thanks
DanHi,
Have you tried with C2 Audit ? Password Audit from www.sqlsecurity.com ?

Passing system variables to stored procedure
How do I pass system variables to a stored procedure? Is it possible to have an OLE DB transformation with the following sql command: exec InsertIntoLog @.MachineName, @.TaskName...? Do I have to use a Derived Transformation first to 'convert' variables into columns and then use exec InsertIntoLog ?, ? ...
Thanks for the help.
In the execute sql task refer to parameters with question marks. Then on the parameter mapping page of the execute sql task you can map the question marks to variables.
|||Thanx...I need the same for the OLE DB transformation
|||Do you mean OLE DB source? It's pretty much the same as the execute sql task.
Put question mark's where you want the variable then click the 'parameters' button and choose the variable that you want to use for it.
If your source provider (DB2) doesn't allow you to pass parameters you'll have to create a variable that builds the sql statement referencing another variable. Then change the 'data access mode' in the ole db source to 'sql command from variable'.
Good luck.
|||I mean OLE DB Command Transformation...
|||I think the answer to your original question you want is yes, use the Derived Column to make a variable into a column so that you can use it, and question marks are the placeholders.
|||Audit transformation can also be used (I need to populate log table).

Passing SqlDataSource Properties to Class
Hi,
I have a UserControl called DataPage with the following public property:
privateSqlDataSource sqlDataSource;
publicSqlDataSource SqlDataSource
{
get {returnthis.sqlDataSource; }
set {this.sqlDataSource =value; }
}
In a web form i create an instance of the DataPage UserControl and assign the SqlDataSource properties:
<%@.PageMasterPageFile="~/MasterPages/Page.master"Inherits="IMS.Pages.ModelType"Title="Model Types" %>
<asp:ContentID="Content"ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder"runat="Server">
<ims:DataPageID="DataPage"runat="server">
<SqlDataSourceID="SqlDataSource"runat="server"
ConnectionString="IMSConnectionString"
DeleteCommand="DeleteModelType"DeleteCommandType="StoredProcedure"
InsertCommand="InsertModelType"InsertCommandType="StoredProcedure"
SelectCommand="SelectModelType"SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"
UpdateCommand="UpdateModelType"UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure">
<DeleteParameters>
<asp:ParameterName="ModelTypeID"Type="Int32"/>
</DeleteParameters>
<UpdateParameters>
<asp:ParameterName="ModelTypeID"Type="Int32"/>
<asp:ControlParameterControlID="UpdateModelTypeTextBox"Name="ModelType"PropertyName="Text"Type="String"/>
</UpdateParameters>
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ParameterName="ModelTypeID"Type="Int32"/>
</SelectParameters>
<InsertParameters>
<asp:ControlParameterControlID="InsertModelTypeTextBox"Name="ModelType"PropertyName="Text"Type="String"/>
</InsertParameters>
</SqlDataSource>
</ims:DataPage>
</asp:Content>
Then in the UserControl I try to call the SqlDataSource.Insert() method, and I get the following error:
"The SqlDataSource control 'SqlDataSource' does not have a naming container. Ensure that the control is added to the page before calling DataBind."
Now, based on the error message it sounds like that SqlDataSource is not contained in either the web form or the usercontrol. Any ideas, thanks very much for any help people.
Grant
It doesn't look like you're actually adding the SqlDataSource to the page. It's being created, and some properties are assigned to it, but no one is adding it to the control tree. What you're doing here is a bit beyond what UserControls are meant to do. You should typically never have a control be a settable property on another control. Why not just have a DataSourceID property on the UserControl and just declare the SqlDataSource on the content page? It seems that you aren't gaining much anyway with your syntax since you're placing so many details on the content page.
Thanks,
Eilon
Many thanks for your response. I have managed to get this to work by basically doing as you suggested. Sometimes the obvious can get a little twisted!! The problem that I face now is that any ControlParameters that I setup on the SqlDataSource are visible as they are inside the DataPage naming container. Maybe you can help with this??
What I am trying to achieve is a templated control that takes care of all my 'simple' data pages. The Usercontrol has a MultiView with the following views: a paged repeater, a delete view (allowing confirm / cancel), a deleted view (report showing success of delete), an insert view (allowing insert information, insert / cancel), an inserted view (report showing success of insert), an update view (allowing updating of information, update / cancel), an updated view (report showing success of update), and an error view (report detailing error).
I have exposed an ITemplate property for each view (repeater view obviously has HeaderTemplate, Footer, Item, AlternatingItem) in the UserControl with a content place holder in each view in the neccessary postion. These templates are then provided on the WebForm. Is there anyway to get the WebForm to recognise these templates at design time? At present I have to work in code view. Cannot switch Error... Like you said previously I think I am trying to gain a little too much from the UserControl (however, the templates etc all work beautifully, just can't use deisgn view).
What I am trying to achieve is the ability to create all my 'simple' data webforms without needing any code behind, i.e. it can all be achieved through markup. All neccessary code is encapsulated in the DataPage UserControl. This would mean that about 80% of my pages are dealt with for every project!!
Any light that you can shed on this would be much appreciated.
Many thanks for you efforts (Eilon and anyone else that takes the time to read this),
Grant.
