PDF rendering bug in SP2

We just upgraded to SP2 and some reports now fail to render in PDF format. They render successfully as HTML within IE, but exporting to PDF gives the following error:

An error occurred during rendering of the report. (rrRenderingError)

We have got same problem and I have found that it happens with reports containing *.pjpeg images. Not all *.pjpeg gives this problem.

PDF Exporting problem

I am using report viewer and exporting my report to pdf format.The report is displaying very odd there.Can anyone help me to adjust the original format there.

What do you mean by odd?

Not to hijack your post, but maybe you are having the same problem as I am.

My report has three columns of yearly sales (in dollars), when I export the report the columns will shift to the left if any of the columns are blank.

try putting the information in a rectangle so that they can stay together if any part of ur data is missing.

FYI, I fixed my problem, by taking the Yearly columns out of a filtered List and just filtered the textbox with an "If.. Then.." and made it return $0.00 instead of a blank.

If you're report width is too wide then while exporting to pdf it wraps the content exceeding the standard width (8.5") and pushes it to the next page. If you apply colors to the various ctrls on your report including its body you can debug where exactly it spills over.

Remember while exporting to pdf or printing, the interactive height of the report should be 8.5" x 11" . Your report's body width should also be 8.5" however the height can be as long as you want it.

|||Hi,My problem is same as your problem.I think this is the report problem itself.I had a table and it has 5 columns,when i export data from my repot viewer to pdf so the column shifted to next pages.and 2 column is display in one page and next is shifted in next page.Using rectangle is another way.Can i use third party control.|||

PDF export results in extra pages.

I am experiencing some quirks when exporting to PDF.
I have read all the other posts about page sizes, margins, etc and my situation seems to be a bit different.

PageWidth = 21cm
PageHeight = 29.7cm
Margins = 1cm

Body.Width = 19cm

I have a report that contains a bar chart (Height = 15cm, Width = 19cm) and below that a rectangle that contains two text boxes with totals information (Left = 11.6cm, Width = 7.4cm, Height 0.5cm)

Now most of the time it exports to PDF perfectly - all on one page as would be expected

If however the chart has more than say 20 items on the y-axis then the rectangle gets pushed onto an new page.

For extra information, but not to confuse the issue I also have a page header and footer that have items lined up right to the edge (left + width = 19cm) and they all display fine on the one page. It is just this rectangle that is having the problem.

When I move the rectangle to the left a bit (11.4cm) so 0.2cm away from the right hand edge then it works fine.

It is just very strange because I cant see how it is getting shifted only when the chart contains a lot of items.

Any ideas?

I finally found a solution that works for me, just after I posted - usually the way.

I have created a rectangle with left = 0cm and width = 19cm and then placed the text boxes
inside that rectangle, positioned where I need them.

Once I do that it renders onto one page.

What I think is going on here is a precision problem. I suspect that MS being a US based company their base units are the imperial system so Inches. So even though you can express your measurements in cm, pt's, etc - they are always converted to a base unit of inches. With any conversion process you can get problems with precision and that is what I think is happening here.

So I feel the best way to avoid these precision bugs is to adopt a report design strategy of not having floating report items in your report. Group items by placing them in a rectangle and set the left to 0 and the width to the exact page width boundary (in this case 19cm)

The other solution is to always use the same base units as the renderer (inches) that way you wont suffer conversion precision problems. Unfortunately for me it would take forever to convert all mine from cm to inches.

PDF Export Prompts for Authentication

I am having a weird problem with just one report in production. When
exporting to PDF format only, the browser prompts for user authentication.
No matter what you type in the window (even admin for server) it just keeps
popping up. When you click cancel you see the following error.
HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.

upgraded to SP1, the problem went away.

As posted before I've got the same problem. And yes, you are right, in the
designer I receive a different error. Unfortunately I can not find the posts
where a solution for this is stated. Can you please explain to me how to fix

I have seen this only once before and reinstalling the Arial font fixed this issue. The error message you see comes from the Windows GDI library. To reinstall Arial, do the following. Note that these instructions are for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 only.

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts

2. Right-click the Arial (TrueType) font and select delete

3. Reboot

4. Expand Arial.tt_ from the i386 or AMD64 directory on your Windows CD to a directory on your hard drive. To expand, you can use the expand.exe file in the i386/amd64 directory or an application like 7-Zip.

5. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts

6. From the File menu, choose Install New Font and then select the Arial.TTF file you expanded.

7. Reboot

PDF export buggy?

I have a LocalReport, when I'm exporting to a PDF using the following
code:

This works, except that some people that recieve the PDF cannot print
it properly. Our graphics guru was able to reproduce the problem and
said it seemed that those that didn't have postscript drivers wouldn't
be able to print the PDF. PCL drivers print the PDF fine.
Any idea what I can do to correct this? Is this a known issue?

AndyI've been able to verify this.
Using the PCL drivers for a laser printer we have here, the PDF prints
fine. Uninstalling the print drivers and installing the PS printer
drivers, and we get one page with a few portions of text, followed by
a second page with this text:

So I don't know if the particular PNG I was using was corrupt, or if
LocalReport.Render simply can't handle PNGs, but changing the PNG to a
JPG and using the JPG has fixed the issue, in case anyone else has
this problem.

PDF Export and extra pages

I'm having a problem exporting a report to PDF. In the viewer, the report looks great. When I export to PDF, all the group totals end up on a separate page. This inflates the pages by a great deal for a good size report.
I'm using SQL Server 2005 beta2 but I have also read about this problem in 2000 SP2. Does anyone have a solution to this? I'm going crazy trying to figure out the answer!!! Sad

The report width is too large.
Click on the main area of the report and observe the size in the properties.
Now click on the gray area outside the report and look at the PageSize and the Margins properties.
The width of the report itself must be less than or equal to the width in the PageSize property minus the sum of the left and right margins.|||Have you read the following blog article:

You need to do adjust the table correctly. just decrease the width of the table and other objects.

if width of the objects does not fit in a page than it will be divided into two pages in pdf. so try to adjust the width of the objects.

I had the same problem and this is what I found. If the report is defined as an 11 x 8.5 (landscape) report with .5 margins (defined in report properties) all around your report data cannot exceed 10".

10" + .5 left margin + .5 right margin = 11.

If you exceed this the page will split.

PDF bookmarks

Hi all,
I need help. I want to have bookmarks in my report after exporting to pdf format. How to do this?

I have two issues when exporting a report to Excel or pdf.
1. When exporting to pdf, the underline font attribute is lost. Is
this a version issue or is there something I can do to circumvent this
(other than place a border on the text box which will look bad)?
2. When exporting to pdf and Excel, I am getting a lot of white space
at the start of the report (in pdf) or between list items (in excel).
The pdf white space is almost an entire page.
I am using Reporting Services SP1.I am not seeing the first issue. I can successfully export textboxes with
underline set.
On the second one, do you have CanGrow on textboxes with extra content in
them (spaces, returns)?

I do have some text boxes with cangrow, but they are pretty limited in

been trying a couple of things, and the null grouping wasn't the
solution. Actually, here is the skinny.
I have a table of employee data. I had a list which grouped the
employee id inside a group for location which was inside a group for
company. All of these list groups were necessary to provide the
different pieces of information to the user. A text box with the
employee name was placed in the employee list group and also a table
provided the detail employee information necessary. When this is
rendered to the Report Manager, all is visible as expected. When I
render to PDF, the first several employees are missing with the larger
reports.
To work around this issue, I instead placed a table header with the
employee name on the table and removed the Employee id list. This
table was then placed in the location group. All data is now
rendered as expected in PDF. This is not as the users hoped, as the
text box allowed me to move the employee name where they wanted on the
report and I am a bit more limited with the table grouping.
