PDF rendering: Characters overlap in Verdana

On some of our RS machines the Verdana font doesn't render correctly in PDF
format, there is no spacing between the letters (all at the same location).
Other fonts like Arial render correctly. Is this a known issue? sp1 has been
installed (I know there were some issues with this before service pack 1).

Software DesignerEnsure Verdana is on the server box as well as the development
computers.
Then, on the server, use the Fonts control panel to open all Verdana
font files. Then reboot the server.
This helped us with similar problem - hope it works for you!|||Thanks for your reply. This doesn't solve our problems however. Any other
suggestions?
Was it the first time you rebooted the server after installings sp1?

Sounds like your problem may lie elsewhere - other things to try would
be ensuring you are using Acrobat Reader 7, or simply not using the
problematic font (kludgy, I know...)|||We use Arial Narrow and ever since we went to a W2K3 box everything exports
correctly, except for PDF which substitutes Helvetica or something with weird
spacing. Did you ever get it fixed?

PDF Rendering from an ASP page

Hi Friends,
How can we render a page in pdf format directly from the Web
Aplication. With out the File Down Load screen.
Thanks
Josethis is a browser issue. You can stream the report (in any format) down to
the browser as
contenttype={what ever you got} and
response.writebinary({your array of bytes})
The browser decides to do the open vs. save dialog depending on its own
settings, I think.

PDF Rendering bug

We are trying to publish a group of financial reports using SQL Server
Reporting Services. We have hit a snag when we try to render the reports in
PDF format. The leading spaces of each line are stripped in the output
file. For example:

Department 10.7240 - ICU

Expenses SubDepartment
-- -
1,200 100
454 150

Becomes:

Department 10.7240 - ICU

Expenses SubDepartment
-- -
1,200 100
454 150

Does anyone know a solution for this problem? By the way, we did upgrade to SP2.
That did not correct the problem.

This blog entry (actually the comments for the entry) discusses same. Long story short, the PDF extension strips leading spaces in this version of SSRS, and there is no workaround :(

http://blogs.msdn.com/bimusings/archive/2005/06/15/429607.aspx

It sounds like you are "artificially" adding these spaces to make things line up. Can you re-position the textboxes which show the values and/or use the alignment settings to make the same thing happen?

|||

Thanks for the information. Actually we are moving a fully formatted report from an old DEC Alpha system to .pdf files. Currently this is done manually. It is a process that involves cutting and pasting hundreds of pages of the original report into output for individual departments. The SSRS report consists of a single text box to hold the lines of the source report. That is why we have leading spaces.

We are able to do all the breakout of individual sections using SQL Server, but It looks like we will have to find another product to do the final conversion from text to .pdf. Actually, tiff files come out great, but they are huge and slow.

Thanks again for the good information.

PDF Rendering - Page break with images

Hi,
I have a main page which has subreports, images and tables. in Preview i can
see the reports with proper page breaks, but when i render it to pdf, the
image and table in the main page is moving to another page, actually only 3
pages has to be printed in pdf but it is printing to 10 pages.
any suggestions please.
Thanks and regards,
AnithaI got the solution, i need to put all the lables and data in a Table to

Place a rectangle in a blank area of the body.
Cut the controls including tables you want to contain, select the
rectangle, then paste the controls back in. Align things the way you
want inside the rectangle. This is the best way to restrict things in
RS. It may not work, but it's worth a try.
Cheers

PDF Rendering

I am trying to find the best way (as well as sample code) to render a report
(probably in PDf format) to a shared directory when the user clicks on a
button called from a web page. The report should be converted to PDF and
placed in a predefined location without any interaction from the user ,
except the click of course. Any ideas, sites, sample code?here is some sample code (using VS.net 2005 against RS 2000)
to make the web reference, right click on 'references' and 'add web reference'
then enter
http://<servername>/reportserver/reportservice.asmx
and name/rename it 'reportservice' to match with my sample
this is just in a win32 vb.net form with a button to run the code
Private Sub ReportGen(ByVal OutputFormat As String, ByVal ReportLocation As
String, ByVal startdt As String, ByVal enddt As String, ByVal CustRepGp As
Integer, ByVal CustName As String)
Dim rs As New ReportService.ReportingService()
rs.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
' Render arguments
Dim result As Byte() = Nothing
Dim reportPath As String = ReportLocation
Dim format As String = OutputFormat
Dim historyID As String = Nothing
Dim devInfo As String ="<DeviceInfo><Toolbar>False</Toolbar></DeviceInfo>"
' Prepare report parameter.

'N.B. the parameter names are case sensitive as per what you called them in

sh.SessionId = rs.SessionHeaderValue.SessionId

rs.SessionHeaderValue.SessionId)
Console.WriteLine("Execution date and time: {0}",
rs.SessionHeaderValue.ExecutionDateTime)
Console.WriteLine("Is new execution: {0}",

Catch err As Exception
Console.WriteLine(err.Message)
End Try

Try

End Sub
'in order to call the above code you will need something like
ReportGen("YOUR FORMAT e.g. PDF",
"/folderonReportServer/anotherfolder/REPORTNAME", "MY PARAM 0", "MY PARAM 1",
ANOTHERPARAM, AnotherParamforNamingTheFileOnly)
obviously you can export to other formats
N.B. all non HTML formats come back in a single stream so you can use this
example, can't remember how you do it in HTML but it's pretty similar

I am quite new to this kind of thing, but this is exactly what I'm trying
to do (autorender to pdf). I am having a couple of difficulties however
trying to understand it all. I have a couple basic questions (I think).
I've created a simple 1 form vb.net application with a button that says
"Create PDF".
For simplicity I've hard coded my 1 parameter (the Invoice Number "Id")
I've modified your code to the point where VB has no errors but Im missing
some values for variables.
1. ReportLocation: How do I determine this? Is this a network location
where the .rdl exists, or is this the ReportServer URL that I see if I access
the report through ReportManager, or is it something else...? Also, should
this include .rdl extension
2. Where does the PDF get created? I'm not sure I understand where the
output goes, as I'm not providing it with a "dump" location
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated ...

PDF Render Problem

Hello,
Below is the code I have written using SOAP API, VB.Net and ASP.net, so that
user can download the report onto their local drive. everything works fine
except when they open the file it gives errors ' There was an error opening
this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired'. Please let me
know what is wrong with this code.
Thanks
_sReportLocation = "/BAOS Reporting/DashBoardReport/RepoDashBoard"
_S_DEVICE_INFO = "<DeviceInfo><Toolbar>False</Toolbar><HTMLFragment>true</HTMLFragment></DeviceInfo>"
_bResults = rs.Render(_sReportLocation, "PDF", Nothing,
_S_DEVICE_INFO, Nothing, Nothing, Nothing, Nothing, Nothing, Nothing,
Nothing, Nothing)
Response.Clear()
Response.ContentType = "application/pdf"
If _sMimeType <> "text/html" Then
Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;
filename=" & "BarChart.pdf")
End If
Response.BinaryWrite(_bResults)

Raj ChandraDoes it work on some computers but not all? This may sound kind of silly,
but we have seen similar problems with Adobe before.
Try deleting all of temp internet files on the client computer and running
the report. Its worked for us in the past when the report runs fine on one
computer but not the next.

I tried on a different machine it did not work and I also tried after
deleting temp files same result.

PDF Render performance with SP1

Hi,
We have been working with some lrge PDF reports (200-400 pages) and have been anxiously awaiting
SP1 because of performance problems we have been having.
Our initial tests show that the performance is better: Given about 3000 records from SQL Server,
we generated a 272 page report.
Pre SP1: 4 minutes 35 seconds
With SP: 2 minutes 5 second.
So it is just over twice as fast. I also noticed that it is consuming less memory (roughly down
from 700MB to 400MB)
We still would like to get the performance much better and I'm looking for help to understand the
process and what we can do. In the past, running this report in MS Access and using ActivePDF took
10-20 seconds to generate the same report. Why is there such a disparity?
The SQL Query is taking 1-2 seconds at most, then all of the time is spent in aspnet_wp - all CPU,
negligible disk I/O. How do you suggest we identify the time spent?
Are there any tricks to making the report more efficient so that the PDF render time is better? Do
you have some favorite performance counters to watch to better isolate this?
We are trying to convert to using RS exclusively for our reports, but this performance may prevent
us from doing so - any help would be appreciated!
Thanks to all,
JamiIn general, the rules around RDL are much more complex than that of Access.
So much of the time may be in processing, not rendering. What is the time
for XML? Also, what type of data regions are you using (list, table,
matrix?).
Nonetheless, we will continue to work on both performance and size for
future releases.

at is converting some of your report to tables instead of lists. Tables can
sometimes be faster to render.

>|||We have been doing some testing with one of our reports and found a few interesting things. Here
is the basic information on what we did and how it affected the PDF size and PDF render
performance. All of the reports we ran were dominated by PDF render (checked in the execution
log). We were unable to get adequate performance from this report, so we solved this with a
different product, but I hope the information is useful to others.
All of these tests were using Report Manager - the processing time is the time for 'View Report' to
preview in IE, the PDF render time is the time to export to PDF from Report Manager.
A. Baseline Report (original form, desired report format):
10-15 seconds processing, 5:27 in PDF render, 508 pages, 10.6MB
B. Removed grouping and sub-report:
11 seconds processing, 2:10 in PDF render, 508 pages, 10.2MB
C. B with all details line drawing removed, and no logo (now a plain text report):
9 seconds processing, 1:00 in PDF render, 402 pages, 2.6MB
D. C with no line drawing in page header, avoiding overlapping text:
11 seconds processing, 52 in PDF render, 402 pages, 2.01MB
E. D with two fields removed (fairly complex nested iif expressions):
8 seconds processing, 46 in PDF render, 402 pages, 1.92MB
Items C, D, E had slightly different queries which reduced the row count from about 4500 to about
4000. Too bad I saw this late! I retested E with the proper row count to get the following
results:
E2. Corrected where clause to get all the rows:
9 seconds processing, 1:15 in PDF render, 451 pages, 2.16MB
So the conclusions? Grouping is dominating the time to get this report rendered (our grouping
simply puts a header line between groups). Line drawing makes the PDF significantly larger - this
is not too surpising, but other products seem to do this much more efficiently.
Good luck,
Jami

PDF render

Using RS/SQL 2000.
Is there a way to make the rendering of a report in PDF form any faster?
Currently takes about 40 mins for 10,000 pages. Only solution i can think of
is throw more hardware at it.
Thanks,

I'd agree - throw more hardware at it, but I have to ask what everyone else
is probably thinking...

PDF output problem for checkbox like "Ticks" displayed in reports

Hi All,
we created a report that should render some "checked items" (like the ticks
in a checkbox) to indicate the given answers for multiple chooice questions
from a questionaire.
Displaying the tick is done by using a unicode character from the font "MS
Mincho". When we render the report in report viewer, all seems to be fine,
but when rendered to a pdf it goes wrong; the "tick" is replaced with a
question mark.
We can't find any specific unicode/pdf related settings for RS. Any clues.
Many thanks in advance,
TimHi tvds,
I have exactly the same problem, did you find any solution?

PDF Not begin handled by FireFox

When I use the Webservice Render method for a PDF, the PDF shows perfectly
in IE but in FireFox it dumps the text of the pdf instead of rendering it...

PDF has a extra page

Some tips please on PDF rendering.
I have an invoice form report that should be one page in length, but when I
render to PDF I get a 2nd page with header & footer but nothing in the
middle. How do I stop this happening?
brian smithIn VS, under report properties, are your page dimensions set to the proper height and width? Based on those values, is the width of your page in the layout view actually fit that?
I had a similar problem with one of my reports - turned out my margins were larger than I had thought. Shrinking down the report body by about a quarter of an inch solved it.

PDF Export Causes 100 % CPU - MS Response appreciated

I have a 100 page report that I render as PDF and then show in an
IFrame from a C# Ascx user control. It takes about 3 minutes to
render if ONE person is rendering the report. The CPU goes to about
50 %. If TWO people attempt to render the report, the CPU goes to
100% and the reports don't render (at least after 11 minutes).
If I render to HTML, it takes about 15 seconds although HTML Rendering
is not an option in this application.
This is running on a server with 1 GIG of memory Xeon 2.38 processor.
I've installed Service Pack 1 (although it blasted through the install
REALLY FAST so I have my doubts).
I had thought that SP1 was supposed to improve PDF rendering. Is
there something I can program to improve performance?
This issue, if not resolvable, makes RS unusable for this application
which is not an option I'm pleased with.
Thanks in Advance for the Reply

improve it for the next release. If you can send the repro (RDL and data),
we will investigate to see what is causing the problem in your particular

PDF and Merge Cell Border Style Issue

Problem: I have borders that are hidden (Border Style=None) that appear ok in HTML but when Render in PDF they appear when they should not. Basically I am using a few columns like TABS in one Major Column in my report in combination with Merge Cells.

In Sql2000 -> There is no problem in the HTML or PDF rendering.

In Sql2005SP1 -> The problem occurs in two forms:

a) Problem Only Shows up in the PDF Creation call in our ASPX in IIS

b) Problem occurs in both the ASPX call and the Reporting Services Report Upload (Export to PDF)

Is there a fix to this issue or work around?

Solution

1) Reset All Border Styles and Border Colors to Vanilla (I mean every cell)

2) Redo your Border Styles etc but be careful -> It kinda like chess

This is due to that Sql2000 and Sql2005 handles the narly RDL Rendering conflicts differently.

Normally, if a user has a PDF creator software, it is hard to keep
them from modifying the PDF file; however, to set the attributes to
read only, you could try something like this in a custom ASP.NET
application.

Password protection on subscription-based Excel reports

I know RS doesn't offer this now.
I'm trying to figure out a workaround.
I need to:
-run a report on a schedule
-render it to excel
-password protect it
-email it
Subscriptions would be fine if it weren't for the password issue.
I've got DotNet code create the reprot and render it as an Excel
spreadsheet.
I've got code to password-protect the spreadsheet.
I want code to control the above code - to run at a certain time and
then deliver it via email. But it doesn't look like the Subscriptions
object will do this. Subscriptions appears to create the report and
deliver it, but not allow intervention for something like password
protection.My suggestion is that you use a script outside of Reporting Services to send
the mail. You can use CDO or .NET web mail. YOu can then schedule this using
Windows scheduler.
Try using the following code in a VB Console Application (you need to add a
reference of System.Web.dll to your project):
Imports System.Web.Mail
Module Module1
Dim oMail As MailMessage = New MailMessage
Sub Main()
oMail.From = "user@.mydomain.com"
oMail.To = "administrator@.classroom.com"
oMail.Subject = "Sending Using Web Mail"
oMail.BodyFormat = MailFormat.Text
oMail.Body = "Password protected file."
Dim myfile As String = "c:\Myfile.xls"
Dim oAttachment As MailAttachment = New MailAttachment(myfile)
oMail.Attachments.Add(oAttachment)
SmtpMail.SmtpServer = "10.1.1.200"
SmtpMail.Send(oMail)
oMail = Nothing
oAttachment = Nothing
End Sub
End Module

don't think a delivery extension can handle this.
