PDF Rendering Problem - blank pages

I have a report that consists of a number of subreports. When I export to
PDF I get blank pages on every second page. No data is missing, it looks
like an incorrect margin setting or additional page break. If I export the
original "Sub"reports to PDF, then the problem does not occur.
I have checked the margins in the report and the subreports, and they are
all identical. Does anyone have any ideas I can try?
AndreCheck your master report.
Look at your report width as well as your left and right margins.

PDF rendering error; log file entries included.

I am having a problem getting a report with many charts to export to PDF.
Currently the report contains 52 line charts (possibility for much more than
that)and fails when the subscription is running. If I only choose data that
returns about 10 or less charts than it will successfully create the PDF.
Is there a file size limitation or another setting I am missing in the
configuration?

pdf instead of html as default output format

Hi all,
I would like to output all reports in pdf format instead of html.
I dont want to allow users to choose an export format.
So, if they access an URL and fill some textboxes with appropriated
parameters I can send them a ready-to-print PDF file in Internet Explorer.
Is it possible?
(I´m assuming all clients uses IE browser and Acrobat Reader plugin).
thanks a lot!One way you can do it is in the url of the report. You can add at the end of
your report url:
&rs:Command=Render&rs:format=pdf
Since it is in the url you have to be careful how you open it. I just open
the report in a new windows and it will actually render the report in the
adobe acrobat reader progam so there is no url the user can change. You
could embed it in an iframe on a page to display to a user as well.

PDF Image Rendering issue with SP/2

When i export a report to PDF using the preview, my images are
seriously pixelated. I've updated to the SP2 and the issues still
occur.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Ok, this was not an issue with SSRS. The images that were being
included (External) in the report were coming from an ASP.NET web
application. In the application when i was saving the images to disk
(Image.Save(...)) i was not specifying an imageformat. I am not sure
what the default format is, but from attempting to view the images as
"JPEG" it would appear that it is not "JPEG". I corrected this and now
my images render "CRISP" in the PDF.

The report exports just fine to Excel and other reports export to PDF &
print just fine.
A previous post from Bruce Johnson referred to report language settings and
I am not sure which setting to verify.
I am running Reporting Services SP2.

the problem. I was able to isolate it down to a particular group footer and
then got the "bright" idea to check for a service pack. Installed to
development and server and all is good again.

PDF Export Very SLOW ! MS Rerporting Services TEAM Where Are you ??

I have a matrix report that produce 79 pages on the HTML browser in 30
seconds, but
if I try to export the report in a PDF format it take more than 1 our !!!
The system configuration is:
IBM Server with 2 Pentium Xeon of 2.4 Ghz
1 Gb of RAM
Fast network HD
Windows 2003 Server SP1 (SBS)
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Rerpoting Services SP2
Do you have any idea about this problem ?
I've saw there are some old messages about this problem on this newsgroup,
but nobody of the
Microsoft Rerpoting Service Team has reply !!!
I think this is a very important issue, that can KILL the reportin services
system on a
Serious Real World company application.

MCSDEven 30 seconds for HTML is very slow. PDF definitely is much much slower.
Everything is done in RAM. 1 GB of RAM is pretty minimal. Is your data on
this server as well or just RS? Can you add more RAM to it. Perhaps bring it
up to 2 Gig. Also, an 80 page report while not huge is most likely taking
time due to complexity. You could try splitting it up into multiple reports.
I don't know if RS 2005 has improved performance of PDF rendering or not.

That means that you are trying to authenticate to reportserver with the user 'PPCCWDDC450P81\IUSR_PPCCWDDC450P81, this is an anonymous user that ASPNET uses for executing applications, you only have to add this user to the reportfolder or report item and give permissions of browser.sql

couple of parameters that filters the data. I have it linked from a web
application and it goes directly to PDF. If the parameters are set the
report renders to PDF pretty quickly, the size runs from 1 page to 70 pages.
If we try to render the whole thing it just sits and sits and sits. I let it
run for an hour at one point at the report never appeared. The CPU is spiked
to 25% continually and eventually I have to do an iisreset to. Now I am
pretty sure, say 95% sure that this report worked fine with RS SP1 and SQL
2k SP3a.
So two questions.
Is there a known problem with large PDF exports?
Does anyone know if any third parties are selling PDF rendering extensions
for sql reporting services? I know there is at least one for Excel.So 1 - 70 pages is fast. How many pages is it if it is the whole thing? PDF
rendering and Excel rendering are very resource intensive.

Good news is I have figured out the problem. Bad news is it does appear to
come from a PDF rendering bug.
We mad a minor change to the report and uploaded it, which is when we saw
the problem. I rolled back the report, redeployed and all is well, renders
290 pages in around 20 seconds.
The report has a table with 4 groups. On the third group we added a single
blank row above the group row. The group row contains some text. So for
groups #3 we have two header rows, one blank the other has a datafield. We
basically wanted to add some whitespace. With that extra blank row the
report with null parameters will not render and just pegs the CPU. If we
remove the row it works fine. If we supply a parameter to filter the report
it will render in both cases. I don't know at what point it breaks and I
don't really have the time to mess with it.
I will leave it without the whitespace for now but its very annoying to have
such a simple report change break the rendering.

PDF export results in extra pages.

I am experiencing some quirks when exporting to PDF.
I have read all the other posts about page sizes, margins, etc and my situation seems to be a bit different.

PageWidth = 21cm
PageHeight = 29.7cm
Margins = 1cm

Body.Width = 19cm

I have a report that contains a bar chart (Height = 15cm, Width = 19cm) and below that a rectangle that contains two text boxes with totals information (Left = 11.6cm, Width = 7.4cm, Height 0.5cm)

Now most of the time it exports to PDF perfectly - all on one page as would be expected

If however the chart has more than say 20 items on the y-axis then the rectangle gets pushed onto an new page.

For extra information, but not to confuse the issue I also have a page header and footer that have items lined up right to the edge (left + width = 19cm) and they all display fine on the one page. It is just this rectangle that is having the problem.

When I move the rectangle to the left a bit (11.4cm) so 0.2cm away from the right hand edge then it works fine.

It is just very strange because I cant see how it is getting shifted only when the chart contains a lot of items.

Any ideas?

I finally found a solution that works for me, just after I posted - usually the way.

I have created a rectangle with left = 0cm and width = 19cm and then placed the text boxes
inside that rectangle, positioned where I need them.

Once I do that it renders onto one page.

What I think is going on here is a precision problem. I suspect that MS being a US based company their base units are the imperial system so Inches. So even though you can express your measurements in cm, pt's, etc - they are always converted to a base unit of inches. With any conversion process you can get problems with precision and that is what I think is happening here.

So I feel the best way to avoid these precision bugs is to adopt a report design strategy of not having floating report items in your report. Group items by placing them in a rectangle and set the left to 0 and the width to the exact page width boundary (in this case 19cm)

The other solution is to always use the same base units as the renderer (inches) that way you wont suffer conversion precision problems. Unfortunately for me it would take forever to convert all mine from cm to inches.

PDF Export Prompts for Authentication

upgraded to SP1, the problem went away.

When I try to export my report to PDF it throws me this error:
Exception of type
Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.ReportRenderingException was
thrown. (rrRenderingError)

Index and length must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name:
length
I'm using Reporting Services with SP1.
Thanks in AdvancePlease verify how you have the report Language property set.
If you do not have Language property set to a language-country pair (i.e.
en-us) you will get this error when exporting to PDF.
If you select Czech in Report Designer it will get serialized as "cs". To
workaround this issue you will need to select Czech (Czech Republic)
in Report Designer. This choice gets serialized as "cs-CZ".

PDF Export not complete

When I attempt to export a 6 page report as a PDF file, only page 1 is present.
What is preventing the complete report from exporting?Never mind. After installing SP2, everything is fine now.

Hello,
I would like to know if there is a fix to the PDF export always
printing in Portrait? No matter what I try with my RDL, it always
exports the report to Portrait, is there a way to programmatically
tell the reports server to always export to Landscape with exporting
to PDF? With Excel, MHTML, HTML...they work fine, I am able to print
the exported data in landscape, just not when I export to .PDF

PDF Export Issue

I've searched through this newsgroup for an answer to my problem, and I have
not found one:
I have a (simple?) report that consists of a standard header, body, and
footer. In the body, I have a table that outputs eight columns. The header
pulls parameters that contain default values consumed from queries, and the
footer contains simple aggregate data. The report runs and looks beautiful
in the report viewer from an ASP.NET page.
The problem manifests itself when the report is exported to a PDF. For
every page of data (there should be four), I get three pages. One of the
pages contains the table data, while the other two simply contain header and
footer data, with a blank body. As mentioned, the report looks and acts
fine in preview mode and also in Report Viewer. It is only in the exported
PDF output that I notice the issue.
I can forward a copy of the exported PDF report if that would be needed to
troubleshoot this issue, and I can provided any additional details as
needed.

PDF Export For Matrix And Chart

I have a very simple report with a matrix and a subreport chart.
2 rows in a table object, Row 1 has Matrix, Row 2 has Chart.
When I export to PDF, the Page always breaks before I get the chart.
If I put the chart in Row 1 and the Matrix in Row 2, no problem with
page break.
Any ideas?
I've posted quite a few times re: the PDF exporting of Reporting
Services, I see this as the major weakness of the product. Does MS
have any plans to correct the PDF engine so it robust enought?

As posted before I've got the same problem. And yes, you are right, in the
designer I receive a different error. Unfortunately I can not find the posts

I have seen this only once before and reinstalling the Arial font fixed this issue. The error message you see comes from the Windows GDI library. To reinstall Arial, do the following. Note that these instructions are for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 only.

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts

2. Right-click the Arial (TrueType) font and select delete

3. Reboot

4. Expand Arial.tt_ from the i386 or AMD64 directory on your Windows CD to a directory on your hard drive. To expand, you can use the expand.exe file in the i386/amd64 directory or an application like 7-Zip.

5. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts

6. From the File menu, choose Install New Font and then select the Arial.TTF file you expanded.

7. Reboot

Font 'Arial' doesn't support style 'Regular'.

I have seen this only once before and reinstalling the Arial font fixed this issue. The error message you see comes from the Windows GDI library. To reinstall Arial, do the following. Note that these instructions are for Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 only.

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts

2. Right-click the Arial (TrueType) font and select delete

3. Reboot

4. Expand Arial.tt_ from the i386 or AMD64 directory on your Windows CD to a directory on your hard drive. To expand, you can use the expand.exe file in the i386/amd64 directory or an application like 7-Zip.

5. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Fonts

6. From the File menu, choose Install New Font and then select the Arial.TTF file you expanded.

7. Reboot

PDF export error

I've created a report and it works fine in html,
but when I export to PDF, I receive next error:
Reporting Services Error
Exception of type
Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.ReportRenderingException was
thrown. (rrRenderingError)

Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.ReportRenderingException was
thrown
Index and length must refer to a location within the string.
Parameter name: length
Any suggestions please?

Miguel.Check what the report language property is set to. If it's not a
language-country pair, you might run into this error. For instance, if you
choose "English", this error might occur. Change it to a language-country
pair (for example en-US).

PDF export error

When I try to export a 2400 pages report to pdf get the reporting services
error:
exception of type Microsoft.Reporting.Services.ReportRenderingException was
thrown. index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size
of the collection. Parameter name: index.
The report ran before SP2 fine and after SP2 fine too.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.These are the error I get when debug.
